New Jersey Center for Biomaterials is well equipped with state-of-the-art instruments in a suite of laboratories. These facilities offer excellent technical resources for the experiential training in biomaterials, processes and devices. The dominant themes are tissue engineering and drug delivery technologies.
3D-Printing Laboratory (including Bioprinting): The New Jersey Center for Biomaterials has a blossoming 3D printing program and hosts several 3D printers, ranging from robust teaching tool (SE3D Mini R3bel single and dual-head), to basic research and design tools (Type A Machine 3D printer, Monoprice 3D Printer and Biobots 3D printer), to more advanced equipments such as Formlab II and EnvisionTec’s 3D Bioplotter System - Manufacturer series BIO-01-1000.
Polymer Characterization Laboratory: - 2600 sq. ft. Chemical, thermal, structural properties, and surface features of biomaterials. Quartz microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QSense, Gothenburg, Sweden) enables a gravimetric technique for measuring in realtime the mass of material in liquid adhering to a surface. Also, this device can measure the change of dissipation induced by the surface-adsorbed mass - providing a realtime measurement of the viscoelastic properties of the surface-adsorbed layer. Rheology, melt indexer, cone and plate, thermal analysis, molecular relaxation phenomena, optical microscopy, infra-red microscopy, mechanical property evaluation. FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, UV-Vis Spectroscopy, HPLC high performance liquid chromatography, GPC-gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, mechanical tester with environmental chamber, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, TGA thermogravimetric analyzer, DMA dynamic mechanical analyzer, atomic force microscopy, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry.
Polymer Synthesis and Scale-up Facility – 600 sq. ft. Increasing the batch size of polymers for medical applications; melt and solution polymerization techniques; reaction vessels up to 22 liters.
EN/ISO-14644 Class 7 US Federal Standard 209 (Class 10,000) Clean Room. Equipped for fabrication of prototype devices in GMP-like conditions.
Multi-Photon Microscope. Leica TCS SP2/MP microscope. spectral detection system from 400 nm to 850 nm, scan resolution up to 4096x4096 pixels, integrated with a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser system.
Cell Biology Facility: 720 sq. ft. Provides extensive capability for in-vitro characterization of materials. Cell culture experimentation and experimental design; assay development, equipment assistance and user training in cell culture technique and research. Four laminar flow hoods, four incubators, inverted and reflected light microscopes, benchtop microcentrifuge, fluorescence and absorption plate readers, horizontal gel electrophoresis apparatus, 24-well PCR thermal cycler is available for DNA and RNA analysis, realtime thermal cycling system for DNA/RNA copy number determination, hybridization and allelic discrimination. Shared ownership of confocal laser scanning (Zeiss LSM410) and Confocal multiphoton microscopy (Leica TCS S2 AOBS) facility.
